The British press is always good for fun, juicy celebrity gossip… especially when it’s not busy hacking into e-mail accounts or threatening prime ministers. The latest and greatest bit of celebrity semi-news: that former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have been in talks about maybe, possibly, potentially performing at next summer’s 2012 Olympic Games in London as part of a not-exactly-but-kind-of Beatles reunion performance.

A source close to McCartney spoke to U.K. tabloid The Sun about the potential reunion:
“He has been speaking to organizers and has said he'd love to be involved with the games in some way. The organizers want The Beatles legend to appear alongside other big British acts. And they want Ringo on stage as well to make it extra special. There's also the possibility that George Harrison and John Lennon could be represented by their kids. The Beatles are loved all over the world so it's a no-brainer that they should be represented at the Olympics.”
Should Ringo and Paul decide to perform together, it will be their first time on stage since an impromptu jam in April 2009 as part of a Radio City Musical Hall fundraiser for the David Lynch Foundation.
While John Lennon is, of course, survived by his two talented sons Julian and Sean Lennon, and Geroge’s son Dhani is a talented singer/guitarist in his own right, but, as much as we all adore The Beatles, once half of the band passes away, it’s surely time to hang it up. It’s an infinitely regrettable tragedy that the original Fab Four never reunited while John and George were still alive, but one that I don’t think would be remedied by some photo-opportunity “jam session” between Paul, Ringo, and the children of their dead band mates. It’s a nice thought, but let’s find somebody else to play at the Olympics, yeah?
