Bombs being surgically implanted into bodies sounds like a plot from a science fiction movie, but transportation security officials say there is a very real threat that terrorists are planning to do exactly that in an effort to blow up planes.
Transportation Security Administration officials have sent memos warning U.S. and UK airports that doctors may be working with terrorists to implant bombs in people or animals, according to the Daily Mirror. That's right, it's not just people we have to worry about carrying bombs inside their parts where body scanners can't always to see them –– there's also the chance that Fido could be packing.
Despite the warnings, the TSA says it's not aware of any specific plan to detonate a human/animal bomb on a plane.
The chilling new technology is the result of old-fashioned ingenuity spurred by the introduction of body scanners that could catch traditional explosives but not newfangled implants. Men's appendices and buttoxes and women's breasts are the most popular implant locations, according to security experts. For reals.
On a more sobering note, the Daily Mail reports that as little as 8 oz. of the explosive PETN (the main ingredient of Semtex plastic explosives) is enough to blow a gaping hole in an airplane when activated by a special liquid injected with a hypodermic needle.
