Ah, the tortured musician biopic: Boy raised in poor and/or boring town. Boy's brother/friend dies in tragic machinery accident. Boy becomes man. Man learns guitar/piano. Someone gives man drugs. Man meets girl. Man does drugs. Girl is like, "Stop doing drugs!" Man is like, "No." Man plays guitar/piano. Man hits bottom. Girl is there for man. Man stops doing drugs. The end. It's as predictable as a rom-com.
It worked so well for Oscar bait like Walk The Line and Ray that we're seeing a return to the musician biopic lately, like the Jeff Buckley biopic that's unexpectedly snagged Penn Badgley, and here's a new one too: Brian Wilson, the angelic-voiced schizophrenic who lent his talent to the Beach Boys before descending into madness (and back, he's fine now).
The production company River Road has acquired the rights to Wilson and his wife's lives and has set scribe Oren Moverman to pen the screenplay. Moverman was previously nominated for an Academy Award for his script of The Messenger and is currently working on writing a Nirvana/Kurt Cobain biopic for Universal.
