When the Academy Awards announced that they will be expanding their best picture nominations from 5 to 10, I was outraged. It seemed like a useless ploy to get people to go to the movies- why don't you just make better movies and not pander to coke addicted producers who make schlock like The Zookeeper? Not that the Zookeeper is going to be nominated for an award, but I think you understand what I'm saying.

Anyway, the big news story that the Academy wants you to chat about is the news that the number of nominees for best picture will range anywhere from 5-10. Or a billion. Maybe one. Who cares.
I actually do care, because that means, hopefully, only the cream will rise to the top. A picture will become nominated if it is ranked number one on enough preliminary ballots to amount to 5% ballots cast. There could be 5 nominees, maybe 7. Anything goes! Crazy Hollywood!
Hypothetically, Hollywood could throw a coup and nominate Fast Five. God I would love it if Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel got to go to the Oscars.
There's also some shake ups in the nominations with documentaries, both short and feature length. The window for documentary nominees now open up for a calendar year.
