Balmain has caused a bit of a stir with the release of their embellished flag-print silk tank, and the results are just not pretty. While this sort of weathered and tattered design is what we've all come to expect from the folks over at Balmain, the possible message behind this shirt in particular has everyone a bit on edge.
The tank top, a starred and striped shirt representative of the American flag, held together with safety pins at the seems and punctuated by burn holes, is already sold out on several websites. Forever 21 and Topshop have released knockoffs of the design, hoping the popularity of the original will catch on. But I'm sure they're not charging $1,515 for their shredded American flag shirts. That's right, Balmain has the balls to charge that much for a desecrated American flag tank top. Impressive.

Retired Army soldier George Alatzas spoke to the New York Post:
"I think it is a disgrace for a Frenchman or anyone else to desecrate
the American flag. Our flag has witnessed many sacrifices. It is the
glue that holds our patriotism together. Shame on those who defile it in
any way."
Marty Callaghan told The Today Show: "There’s no breach of flag etiquette about wearing an article of
clothing that happens to be red, white and blue, and that appears like a
flag that might be tattered. Some people think these items are in bad
taste, but there’s nothing we can do or can’t do to urge the
manufacturer to halt sales of these items. We have no issue with these
fashion statements.”
Personally, I'm just not a fan of the shirt itself. It's a simple design that's been seen before, being sold for a ridiculous amount of money because they've destroyed it and made it out of silk.
Would you spend $1,515 for this shirt?
