George R.R. Martin is having one helluva year. His Song of Ice and Fire books are climbing back up the bestseller lists; HBO's adaptation of his Game of Thrones debuted to strong ratings and is already greenlit for a second season; he got married; his long-awaited next book will soon go on sale. Oh, and he's also been named among Time's most influential people of the year. No kidding, Time.
Actor, author, and all-around funnyman John Hodgman bestowed the honor on Martin, calling A Song of Ice and Fire (along with The Wire) an "intimately drawn [world] with stories of a grim conflict and characters so achingly human that you end up rooting, tragically, for both sides."
So very true, though I would say that there are almost as many sides to Martin's series as there are characters. No two people share quite the same agenda, not even siblings. Scratch that, especially not siblings.
But Hodgman gets one thing spot on: "Tyrion Lannister is the best character in fiction since Stringer Bell and... if you have not read these books, you should be ashamed of yourself."
