We knew Jennifer Lawrence had landed the role of Katniss Everdeen and later learned that Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth would play competing love interests Peeta and Gale, respectively. And just this morning we learned that the roles of Glimmer and Marvel had been cast in Gary Ross' hotly-anticipated upcoming adaptation of Suzanne Collins' bestselling YA series The Hunger Games. Was this enough casting info to satiate us? Nope.
It's just been announced that young newcomer Willow Shields (above) will play Katniss' little sister Primrose "Prim" Everdeen, whose drafting into the Hunger Games forces the expert archer Katniss to step in on behalf of the 12-year-old Prim.
Set in a dystopia wherein a reality TV show "battle royale" decides the fate of entire cities and tweens and teenagers fight to the death to feed their families, it seems like high-concept The Hunger Games has been kind of a b*tch to cast. But director Ross had this to say of their discovering New Mexico pre-teen Shields for the part of Prim:
"It's so exciting to find an amazing young actress like the one we just
met. Prim is an emotionally demanding role and in many ways she is the
cornerstone of the story." [The Wrap]
