Apparently Atlas Shrugged Part 1 came out this weekend, and despite what some executives are calling an “awful” marketing campaign, it made an average of $5,640 in each of the showing theaters. Producers are thrilled and plan to expand the adaptation of Ayn Rand to 1,000 theaters by the end of the month.
The marketing campaign in question actually was an internet campaign, mostly directed at the members of the Tea Party, Libertarians, and other people, who like Rand, probably have no sense of humor. Producer John Aglialoro even financed the dystopian drama with his own money, believing that “People are hungry for what these characters are saying.” The characters, if you watch the trailer, will be saying “Business! Railroads! Galt! MONOPOLY!”
All joking aside, the fact that so many people are rushing out to see the film, despite it’s lack of recognizable cast, is purely because it is Atlas Shrugged. It’s Rand. It’s the go to book to cite when you need to sound smart. And who reads these days anyway? Watching the movie will probably be a lot easier.
Also if you’re interested, there is Atlas Shrugged merchandize for sale; items like T-shirts, coffee mugs, posters, and jewelry. I’m hoping the T-Shirt just says “I heart Objectivism.”
