'Forbidden Planet,' 'Aliens' Top George R.R. Martin's Favorite SF Film List

On Mar 31, 2011

George R.R. Martin took time out of his busy schedule of almost but not quite finishing A Dance With Dragons to list his 10 favorite sci-fi films for The Daily Beast. Perhaps it's not quite the series of words and punctuation marks that we'd all like to see, but it does offer some further insight into the Bearded One's mind.

Martin's taste definitely skews towards the classic with only a single film –– James Cameron's Aliens –– made in the last 25 years. The 1956 sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet sits atop the heap, and it's just one of four films on the list produced in the 1950s. Yes, Martin does like the oldies. He does show some love to some genre young'uns in his Honorable Mentions (of course he couldn't stop at 10 films –– this is George R.R. Martin we're talking about after all): Avatar, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence both make the secondary cut, as well as GeekOlogy favorite Serenity

Okay, enough teasing, here's the full list:

  1. Forbidden Planet (1956)
  2. Aliens (1986)
  3. Blade Runner (1982)
  4. Alien (1979)
  5. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
  6. The Road Warrior (1981)
  7. Dark Star (1974)
  8. The War of the Worlds (1953)
  9. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
  10. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Honorable Mentions:

  • Avatar (2009)
  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
  • Serenity (2005)
  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
  • Galaxy Quest (1999)
  • A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001)
  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
  • Charly (1968)

Aliens and Blade Runner definitely make my list. Which sci-fi films make yours?
