Like many Geekologists, I have felt an especially acute desire to help my fellow human in the wake of the disaster in Japan. From video games to technological gizmos to cartoons about giant robots, Japanese innovations have helped to shape my cultural vocabulary since I was a wee lad. Now that Japan is facing a national crisis, I feel it's my duty to show my gratitude for many years of entertainment and overseas camaraderie by helping in any way I can. Thankfully, my fellow Geekologists are making it pretty easy to do good out there.
Case in point: The wonderful blog Play for Japan, a game industry collaboration whose mission is to aid in the earthquake/tsunami relief efforts. Play for Japan connects eager gamers and donors with generous folks who are offering up exclusive, limited-edition game swag to help Japan. The auctions listed on the Play for Japan site promise gamers some pretty impressive loot. Recently brought to the world's attention via Play for Japan: A series of Metal Gear Solid games signed by Hideo Kojima (don't worry, he's all right). If this does not register on your Awesome Meter, you may consider contacting your local technician to arrange repairs.
Tons of other amazing stuff is out there, just waiting for a generous Geekologist like you to spring forward and stake your claim. Announcement book for Final Fantasy XII, previously accessible only by members of the Japanese press? You know it's on there. One-of-a-kind OutRun art? Yours for the taking. Get to bidding, and keep your eyes on the Play for Japan site for further news about relief efforts, donation opportunities, and gaming benefits.
Next stop, all things Japan.
