Championship Week is revving up, and SportsOlogy will be covering all the action like it's our job. Because it is our job. We launch for real on Thursday, March 10.
The Big 12 and basketball are as synonymous as…well, ok they’re
not too synonymous, but they do have some good teams. Pat Knight’s ex-team
Texas Tech is not one of them.
The Favorite: Kansas.
Maybe I exaggerated a bit when I said the Big 12 and basketball are not
synonymous considering the fact that a guy named Dr. James Naismith was Kansas
University’s first coach. That’s about as synonymous as it gets. Even though
Bill Self looks like he should be selling life insurance door to door, he knows
how to win a national title, so they're always a threat to go deep into March. They have the highest shooting percentage in the
country, and as discussed in the Big East preview, shooting well is an
important part of winning basketball games.
The Challenger: Texas.
They beat Kansas in their only meeting this season, so they certainly can win
the tournament. Jordan Hamilton is a beast, but Rick Barnes is like
anti-Krzyzewski in that he always seems to get the worst out of his players in
high-pressure situations. Unfortunately, they no longer have the talismanic
Boobie Gibson to lead them through the trials and tribulations ahead.
The Dark Horse: Kansas
State. Jacob Pullen swore he wouldn’t play in the NIT, and I don’t blame him.
It looks like he won’t have to back up his talk, though, thanks to a great run
at the end of the season started by a win against Kansas. Pullen is such a
beast that he could single-handedly take the Wildcats to a Big 12 title.
Everyone Else: Texas
A&M is ranked, but they tend to lose to good teams, which is a problem.
Colorado and Missouri are making late runs, but I would be very shocked if
anyone other than Kansas or Texas wins this tournament.
