Asking someone to the prom: It's the high-school equivalent of the marriage proposal, which means the pressure's on. The best stories are the ones where the asker mixed intensive planning with the appropriate touches of sentimentality and/or humor.
5. While laughing.
Since the characters on Laguna Beach are totally real, normal teenagers, let's use them as an example. In the season 2 episode "Our Last Prom," for instance, Jeff B. and Jeff C. dress up as gorillas and carry huge banana signs that read, PROM? They jump up and down and scare poor Alex H. and Jessica until the two realize they're living every girl's dream and say yes.
4. A total surprise.
While you could torture yourself in every conversation with your crush leading up to prom, wondering if the next words out of his mouth are "Will you...", there's a sweetness to being taken completely off-guard. There's a caveat to this one, however--hopefully it's a good surprise. A friend of mine shared a story where a guy called her while she was parallel parking; not only was it their first real conversation ever, but she was so stressed about driving that she didn't realize he'd asked her to prom until he asked, "Are you still there?"
3. Utilizing technology.
Imagine you log onto YouTube to watch the Lady Gaga "Born This Way" video. (But don't, it's not very good.) In your related videos you see one with your name in it. You click it, and there's a sweet guy strumming on his guitar and asking you to prom. How can you say no?
2. When he asks with confidence.
Of all the articles listing creative ways to ask girls to prom, this one captured my attention: Guy presents girl with a whiteboard; written on it in permanent marker is, "Who will you go to prom with?" Multiple guys' names are written in eraser marker, with his name in permanent marker. Girl erases the other names until only his remains. Aww!
1. To be asked, at all!
I kid! Maybe you're in a couple, as I was for my two proms, and it just comes up naturally, without any fanfare. Or perhaps you've decided to go stag with a group of friends. Whether the gesture is straight out of the movies or is low-key and even platonic, it will undoubtedly be sweet. Enjoy your prom!
