The Vampire Diaries recap: Season 2, episode 15 "The Dinner Party" (2/17/11)
While Stefan and Elena seemingly laze around at the lake house, Damon throws a fabulous dinner party with the intention of killing Elijah over dessert. And... go!
Living
Let's start with the most low-impact plotline: Bonnie says she and Jeremy can't start anything until she gets Elena's permission. (And she can't call Elena on her cell, why?) But she definitely wants something to start. Too bad their starry-eyed magic party is interrupted by Luka's dad, who snatches Bonnie's powers out of her skull like that. Why'd he do it? Because the first attempt to kill Elijah didn't work, and the original vamp wants to track down Elena.
Dead
Stefan kind of ruins the romance of his and Elena's getaway by confessing to being a real monster in his early vampire days. (Cue flashbacks, including the first time he met his best friend Lexi.) But it turns out that keeping Elena up in the cabin was a bit of a ruse, so that she wouldn't interfere with Damon's plans. The key ingredient to his scheme is to stab Elijah with an ancient blade made to mix with the ashes of some special tree. But as Damon quickly learns, you have to keep the blade inside the original vampire's body.
A revived Elijah comes after Elena, bent on destroying everyone; she stabs herself and starts to bleed, with Elijah unable to come into the house. When she gets him to promise that he'll protect her friends, she lets him heal her... Then in swoops Damon with the knife--this time making it stick. Finally, we discover that once Elijah is dead, Katherine is allowed to leave the cave. But contrary to what Damon thought, she decides to stick around. (Leading to a funny promo next week in which she straightens her hair and starts dressing like Elena.)

Wrap-up: This episode had balls--people followed through on threats, and the shape of things has been shifted: Bonnie's without her powers, and Katherine's back. Actually sort of looking forward to next week.
