American Idol Season 5 runner-up Katharine McPhee has slowly been making her way back into primetime since getting kicked off the long-running vocal competition show.
She was featured on last year's half-hour NBC pilot The Pink House, which does not sound like a vagina metaphor at all, and will be seen in the upcoming romantic comedy feature You May Not Kiss The Bride.
Now Deadline's saying McPhee has been cast in Smash, a pilot pitched by Steven Spielberg and created by DreamWorks TV for NBC. It revolves around a bunch of theater people who come together to put up a Marilyn Monroe musical. The cast also features Will & Grace's Debra Messing (yay!), who nobody, outside of NBC staff scribes, seems to know how to write for (proof of this? Abysmal rom-com The Wedding Date).
McPhee will play a Broadway actress desperate for the Monroe part, opposite Messing's lyricist Julia who still isn't sure the musical is a great idea. We're pretty psyched for Smash; it sounds a little bit like Glee for grown-ups.
