Happy Fandom Friday! Each week, I highlight an aspect of the various fan communities that have sprung around movies, TV shows, books, games, or even memes, if the level of dedication is awesome enough.
Rarely do you find really hardcore music fans--at least, not those who can express their love in a truly geeky way. Mary-Lu Zahalan-Kennedy, then, is a fan to be admired. When the Liverpool Hope University first announced its masters degree in Beatles, Popular Music, and Society in 2009, the Canadian Zahalan-Kennedy was one of the first 12 students to sign up; and in January, she was the first to graduate with this special MA.
And what did she study, exactly? Courses examined the impact of Liverpool on the Fab Four's music, as well as how the Beatles' music has shaped identities and societies then and now. Sure, it's an incredibly specialized major, but considering that it's contained within the field of musicology, it's certainly applicable. And it's not like it was based on, say, Ke$ha. (My alma mater, the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU, offered the chance to make up similar concentrations.)
"I am so proud of my achievement," Zahalan-Kennedy said. "The course was challenging, enjoyable and it provided a great insight into the impact the Beatles had and still have to this day across all aspects of life."
