I thought I was the only one who noticed this, but apparently, a lot of other folks spotted Ariel, the free-spirited princess of Atlantica, hanging around Williamsburg the other day. She was sipping a PBR, taking a break from fixing the bicycle she built from refurbished parts. Once she got her ride repaired, she sighed rather contemptuously, cocked a hip, then headed off to the thrift store for more vintage seashell bras. I was pretty surprised to see the Little Mermaid getting her subculture on, but when I hopped onto Tumblr to check for signs of a burgeoning phenomenon, I struck Internet gold: The "Hipster Ariel" meme is well underway. It's shocking how the addition of bulky glasses onto one especially relevant cel of animation can transform a childhood classic into the stuff of online legend.
