Harry Potter fans, eat your heart out. You may have come up with an actual, playable Quidditch, but I bet it's not as cool as the real-life Hunger Games devised by Spanish Fork High School in Utah.
Inspired by Suzanne Collins' YA novel The Hunger Games, the SFHS Book Club embarked on their own variation of the deadly competition. As opposed to the deathmatch that Katniss and Peeta find themselves trapped in, these adolescents went for more "fun and competitive" activities like blowing up balloons, hula hoops, and hopscotch. (How about Four Square? Now that's a vicious game.) Though to be fair, the kids did get to engage in some swordfighting.
No word on if the teachers ever felt the need to intervene when the action died down, as the Gamemakers were wont to do in the book. However, the school librarian Mrs. Gardner did take on the part of the audience members who sent gifts to their favored tributes--she brought "healthy snacks" for the kids as the battle wore on.
The final challenge? Why, a game of Twister, naturally. The champion was a young lady named Paige--the article neglected to include her last name--but there will be another mock battle next year, so get ready. And of course, the Hunger Games movie comes out on March 23, 2012.
