Fashion Face Off: Miu Miu iPad/iPod Case

On Feb 07, 2011

Not everyone has the same taste when it comes to fashion. Granted Levis sells thousands of  pairs of Straight Leg 505s each year and Forever 21 wracks in $3 billion in sales with their mass-produced designs. But remember, one person will rock their Levis one way, while the other rocks them another. Or heck, they may not even rock them at all.

So with this in mind, we had our two fashion ologists face off on Miu Miu’s  iPad/iPod cases, which are part of the brand’s latest Valentine’s Day pack. The cases come in cherry red or navy patent with red ruffle details.

Ellen’s Take:

What can I say? I’m a girl who likes to accessorize. My Converse always match my cardigan and my band tee always matches my undergarments, yes, I call them undergarments. So when I see an accessory that’ll pull my outfit even tighter together, I get psyched. Like, really psyched!

Now you can just imagine how psyched I was when I saw Miu Miu’s Ipad/iPod cases.

First off, they come in primary colors. Awesome! Because you can totally pair black, white and that other primary color, yellow, with these cases. Plus, a deep purple would even fair well. As for the fabric selection, Miu Miu went with patent leather and me being the animal lover that I am, I applauded them on the choice, but it’s not like I wrote them a thank you letter or anything.

While I may seem overly psyched on these cases, I’ll admit, the design kind of cooled my excitement for a second. I could do without the ruffles, but then I realized that it’s the ruffles  that add the childlike charm to the accessory.

I think that’s what does it for me with these cases, the childlike charm of them. See, when you’re a kid you have your favorite toy and you want to keep it safe, but you also want to keep it looking awesome, you even want to somehow show  that this amazing toy is yours. So while we may not be toting around Talkboys and Game Boys, we are toting around expensive smart phones and tablet computers. And we wouldn’t mind personalizing them with our own fashion statements, be them Miu Miu or Silence & Noise.

Maria’s Take:

An Ipad protector.. the purpose? To protect an Ipad from the potential damages of a traveling device. Clearly, this new miumiu "protector" is beyond that functionality and moreso in the realm of decorative. There was clearly much more thought put into the color choice, the type of shiny leather, the frilly border, which proves to me that there was more thought put into the aesthetics. This focus on aesthetics then turns the Ipad into an accessory.

We have to examine the purpose of an Ipad by beginning with Apple's MO. Apple has been devoted to creating functional, sleek, understated pieces that make the life of a traveling technologically savvy professional easier. Yes, it is based in part on aesthetics with the screen being the way it is, with color selection and placement of icons, but the aesthetics are more minimal than "frilly" to conserve the look of modern professionalism. To turn the Ipad into an accessory is to undermine its very purpose.

I like the Ipad because I can pull it out of my bag anywhere. It's compact, covert, and not obnoxiously screaming "Hey look at me! Look at my clunky PC!". However, miumiu is trying to turn it into an accessory, so it does obnoxiously scream everything that I don't want my apple products to scream. So, I'm highly opposed. No miumiu, back off.
