James Cameron and Fox Snag Shawn Levy to Direct 'Fantastic Voyage'

On Feb 07, 2011

It's par for the course with James Cameron that we can expect to wait six-plus years for his next multi-million dollar spectacle, and the Avatar director is a pro at keeping details of his films under wraps until actual promotion starts. But what we do know about Cameron's upcoming (to use the term loosely) Fantastic Voyage is this:

It is not the Coolio song "Fantastic Voyage."

It is a remake of a 1966 sci-fi adventure film about scientists who are shrunk with new technology onto a ship and attempt to save the life of one of their own. I'm pretty sure they literally go inside his body and kill bad cells a la The Magic School Bus, which is sort of cool but also sort of gross.

Cameron's remake will, naturally, be an epic 3D facef*ck. Among the directors Cameron was in talks with for the film were Darren Aronofsky, Paul Greengrass and others. However, and he and Fox have tapped one of the studio's most commercial in-house directors, Shawn Levy, to helm the project. Which is a little weird because Levy's mostly done comedies like Cheaper By The Dozen, What Happens In Vegas and Date Night.

However, Levy does have something of a CGI background with at least one series (Night At The Museum) so there's that. Whatever, we don't care. Probably these people do, but we kinda don't.
