The Vampire Diaries recap: Season 2, episode 12 "The Descent" (1/27/11)
Tonight's episode, the first after the almost two-month-long winter hiatus, set aside several plotlines--including Bonnie's witchy dealings, Jeremy's angst, and Jenna's one-liners--in order to tie up a major one. By the end of the night, we're left with one less vampire, one new romance, and more than a few moments to make this writer more sympathetic to the show's characters.
Living
There's some trouble brewing in the Gilbert household: Stefan tries to get a hold of Isobel, but John Gilbert appears instead. Elena spends most of the episode watching over the sickly Rose (who had been bitten by Jules and was now deteriorating), but the vamp escapes. Really, Elena didn't do much tonight, though she and Damon had a lot of steamy eye contact. I'm totally ready for Elena/Damon to happen again. Speaking of forbidden romances: Tyler kissed Caroline, after she told Matt that she loved him. Whooops. Then he (Tyler) meets Jules, who reveals that a) Mason was murdered, and b) there are more vampires than just Caroline. Looks like Tyler might be in danger of changing sides...
Dead
OK, where to start... Except for his stealthy attempts at communication, Stefan really didn't do much this episode. Instead, Damon got a lot of screen time, and at least twice I got a bit choked up: First, when he and Rose had a weird psychic dream-meld while he was forced to stake her in the real world; then later, when he paralyzed a poor woman as he ranted and struggled against his nature (see the wrenching quote below).
Tally
As Damon says: "Funny how history repeats itself." Sometimes these similarities come in the space of a single episode.
Times Rose thinks Elena is Katherine: 2
Guys who kiss Caroline: 2
People who consider staking Rose: 2
Hallucinatory dream sequences: 1
Quotes
Caroline: "Everyone has to stop kissing me!"
Damon: "I'm not human, and I miss it so much."
Wrap-up: A solid mix of tying up loose ends, and unraveling new ones.
