Harvard University's Hasty Pudding Theatricals is a student society known for its burlesque and student-written musicals, and counts among its alumni Jack Lemmon, FDR, J.P. Morgan, David Javerbaum, and Rashida Jones. However, the group also annually names famous actors and actresses as Man and Woman of the Year; since 1951, the award has gone to those who have made "lasting and impressive contribution[s] to the world of entertainment." This year, the award goes to Julianne Moore.
Moore is an excellent choice, as her roles of the past year demonstrate her willingness to laugh at herself. Though her most lauded role was one in a pair of quirky lesbian parents in The Kids Are All Right, she also appeared on five episodes of 30 Rock as Jack's thickly accented fling Nancy. She even gave the role of the Virgin Mary a spin in the comedy Elektra Luxx, appearing to the titular pregnant porn star (played by Carla Gugino).
The distinction is taken quite seriously by its recipients, who always attend the ceremony as well as a parade through Cambridge in their name. (The Man and Woman of 2010 were Anne Hathaway and Justin Timberlake.) Moore's celebration is on January 27, with an honorary roast and award ceremony. The Man of the Year fete takes place on February 4; the actor will be announced next week.
