Square Enix's splurge of secretive registrations has led to some unexpected fruit. After quietly picking up the trademark for a Final Fantasy Type-0 title and registering a bunch of domains with similar names –– including finalfantasy13-2Game.com –– Square Enix has officially announced that Final Fantasy XIII-2 is real and will be a direct sequel to last year's Final Fantasy XIII. I guess I'll have to finish that game after all.
The announcement came at Square Enix's "1st Production Department Premiere" in Japan, where it was revealed that FFXIII-2 would see the return of Lightning as a character (though it's unclear if it's as a playable character) as well as FFXIII's director, Motomu Toriyama, and producer Yoshinori Kitase. Both the XBox 360 and PS3 are scheduled to get the game sometime this year. That's for Japan, however, so look for FFXIII-2 to hit stateside closer to 2020. I kid, I kid. 2014.
In other Final Fantasy news, famous optimist/dead girl Aerith from FFVII will appear as an assist character in the upcoming PSP fighter Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy. The only way to get Aerith is to pick up the paid demo Dissidia Duodecim Prologus Final Fantasy (isn't that a mouthful?), which is available on the Japanese Playstation Network now for 300 yen or about $3. The demo doesn't have a US version yet, but it'll probably arrive before 2014. Probably.
