Aside from the intergalactic/-dimensional battles, a lot of the conflict in superhero stories is based on the fraught relationships among its extraordinary protagonists. Especially in a universe like that of the X-Men, where its characters are separated by different generational values (the students becoming the teachers, etc.) and struggle with unity because no two mutants are alike. Of course there are rivalries, prejudices, and good old-fashioned romantic resentment. Oh, plus a few clones and alternate-universe selves. So, it's useful to have a chart like this one, created by graphic designer Joe Stone. But he didn't want to make it too easy for readers: Each mutant is depicted in minimalist form, with just a few colors and an iconic feature highlighted.

Bigger version here. In case you can't read the key, solid blue line = married, dotted blue = dated, red = offspring, dotted orange = clone, green = other relation, and dotted purple = nemesis.
