I'm not gonna lie to you, Geekologists: I was a little bit confused when the casting for the Spider-Man reboot was announced and the geek world got introduced to Andrew Garfield. You have to remember that back then, nobody had seen The Social Network. Nobody knew the kind of fiery charisma that Garfield could bring to the screen. Nobody knew how he'd hold up in action scenes, whether he could carry an origin story, what sort of romantic lead he might become. The Spider-Man mask had fallen off to reveal someone we had never met.
Of course, since then, Garfield's given us plenty of reasons to believe--not the least of which is his recent in-costume photo. I'd be a fool to disagree with Sharon; the photo is made of 100% grade-A, cage-free win. Yet even as I look upon Garfield's spandex-wrapped awesomeness, a memory calls out to me from the distant past. It is a memory of how things might have been, of a heroic struggle long since abandoned; rather like ABBA's classic "Fernando," except significantly less catchy. What if another man wore the red and blue--not the widely beloved Social Network luminary but instead a more unsung hero, like Parker himself?
What if Donald Glover were Spider-Man?

I could comment on this with some pro-Glover partisan ramblings, but because I like Garfield and because there are still plenty of superhero fish in the superhero sea for Glover, I think I'm just going to leave it as a glimpse into an alternate universe. Not a better or a worse universe, just...a different universe.
Excelsior.
