I know it can be hard sometimes to stand up with pride and call yourself a Geekologist. Just ask Patton Oswalt: The culture we've built from Weighted Companion Cubes and Tetris blocks is not always the best, safest, or most comfortable place to call home. Take online gaming, for example. We're all out there to have fun--but how many times have you run across somebody who just wants to spew flames, throw games, and ruin everybody's good time? Heck, how many times have you been that somebody? The temptation is there, my friends, and too often, it calls the shots when a game turns against us. The geek culture, if such a thing exists, is supposed to celebrate the best parts of humanity--fantasy stories explore the heights of selfless heroism, while sci-fi celebrates the boundless potential of the human imagination. Yet sometimes, it's easy to feel the good ship Geekology straying from its original course.
Which is why you are about to watch a tiny child narrate a StarCraft II replay.
I'm not about to suggest that this video alone will restore the full measure of your faith in your fellow geek. That may be a task beyond the scope of a single PvZ replay. But watch carefully when our senior narrator, Blamous, zooms in, at his daughter's request, to get a better look at a bunch of Hydralisks. Isn't that kind of like a dad hoisting a kid up on his shoulders to help them look over a fence or a crowd? I feel like what we have here is a classic, affectionate parental gesture translated perfectly into the digital realm. Something way more important than unit counts or resources is happening here, and, to the credit of gamers everywhere, it is happening through interstellar warfare.
I'm so thrilled to see some learning going on here ("Remember the Gateways, from last time?" "Yeah!"). Even making the connection that two Pylons make two circles is evidence of a respect for the system and its intricacies. As a Zerg player, I'm a little bummed that the little girl in question doesn't like Overlords, but hey, we've all been there.
To sum up: Adorable, thought-provoking, worthy. Props to NuubCast, Blamous, and the future StarCraft II champion of the world:
Wonderful stuff. Send this to Patton Oswalt immediately.
