Kathryn Bigelow has bounced back with vigor since her pilot about a dysfunctional Manhattan family was passed on by HBO. Her follow-up to The Hurt Locker, the film that won her a Best Director Oscar over ex-husband James Cameron and his way-more-expensive megamovie Avatar, was supposed to be Triple Frontier.
The chronicle of South American organized crime has a significantly larger budget than modestly-funded The Hurt Locker and a star-studded cast connected with the project-Will Smith, Sean Penn, Javier Bardem, Christian Bale, Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp have been in and out of the trades on Triple Frontier.
But thanks to scheduling conflicts (Depp has to finish out his Burton project), Bigelow is biding her time with a different project until shooting Frontier in 2011. This picture has a similar budget as The Hurt Locker's, around $10 million, and will be a black-ops thriller. It will also be written by Locker's scribe Mark Boal.
Hey, if it worked the first time around, right?
