Top Geek Christmas Gift Guide Pt. 2

On Dec 20, 2010

From gamer to Trekkie, I'm sure there is something on this geek present list that will make your special one's nerdy heart shine.

1. Posters (or other apparel) from Penny Arcade. Chances are your geek knows and loves Penny Arcade. This is one of the biggest online comics and its main focus is critiquing video games and pop culture. Were someone to give me a poster of the Cardboard Tube Samurai or a hat with The Fruit Fucker on it, I may just fall in love. I know xkcd is also a great resouce for gift giving but honestly I'd rather receive a poster from PA and a book of xkcd because Penny Arcade has such a higher quality of art.

2. Legos. This may seem crazy because presumably you are buying for an adult geek and not an 8 year old boy, however, almost everyone I know (myself included) used to love playing with these. Many of my friends (especially male friends) have mentioned in passing how they wish they could spend some time playing with legos again. I think this gift is a great way to remind them of their childhood and to inspire them to set aside some creative play time. Plus, Lego has come out with tons of new themed sets... my personal favorite is the deep sea adventure.

3. Buy an old gaming console. Nintendo 64, SNES, Sega... this period of gaming was golden. I'm not saying I don't love my wii, but I think it's a more clever gift to buy someone an old system with classic games rather than buying the newest game or the newest console (plus probably cheaper). Look on ebay or in local gaming/electronic stores because many do buy-backs and often have these products available. Mmm, this is making me want to whip out my old, non-color, giant Gameboy!

4. TV shows on DVD. Now, of course you could go buy the new Star Trek movie or Iron Man and I'm sure they would love it--they were awesome--but for some reason I think giving TV is a better option. Season one of Heroes (before the show went crazy), Season two of Arrested Development, any season of Adult Swim's Robot Chicken, these are all excellent. Even some kind of nature show like Planet Earth, Life, or Blue Planet (anything narrated by David Attenborough) would be amazing.

5. A good massage. I think often people forget that we geeks, too, enjoy the finer things in life. Having an appreciation for well-painted Warhammer figures doesn't negate an appreciation for fine wine! And while a day at the spa may be overkill (and outside of most price ranges) a nice massage is certainly within the realm of possibility. After all, spending so much time hunched over a computer (whether coding, gaming, designing, or chatting) takes its toll on one's spine and shoulders. And if you're broke, even a home-made coupon given to a significant other for a quality massage would be appreciated, I'm sure.
