The Walking Dead recap: Season 1, episode 2 "Guts" (11/7/10)
The living refugees snarl, Rick eulogizes a zombie, and undead guts spray everywhere--only the second episode, and already we're getting a handle on how gory and in-your-face this series will be.
What We Know So Far:
- There is a camp of refugees outside of Atlanta, and volunteers regularly loot the city's stores for food and supplies.
- Shane is quickly becoming Carl's father figure.
- The zombies know how to use rocks to break down glass doors--eek.
- Survivors don't magically become families; if anything, their prejudices and conflicts just get inflamed.
- Back to the zombies--they're drawn to sound and smell, like dogs.
Highs:
- Shane/Lori sex. OK, you might classify that as a Low considering the infidelity and the fact that Shane is just a jerk, but it's a coupling that never would have happened had the zombies not appeared, and guilty, too. So, hot.
- Rick taking on Dixon: "There are no n----rs anymore, no dumb-as-sh*t, inbred, white-trash fools, either. Only dark meat and white meat."
- Andrea stealing a mermaid necklace for her sister
- Rick's impromptu memorial for a felled zombie before chopping its head off
Lows:
- The various racial and power tensions among the refugees
- Rick and co. covering themselves in zombie blood and guts in order to sneak by the walkers
- ...aaand cue the rain
- T-Dog having to leave Dixon on the roof because he drops the key to his handcuffs
- Rick still hasn't been reunited with Lori and Carl, and no one even knows he's related to them--drawing the tension out too much, guys
Zombie of the Week: The genius who manages to smash in the doors to the department store with a boulder, while his brethren just flail and moan. Gold star for this guy.
Kill of the Week: Rick getting a walker right between the eyes with his ax, right as the zombie stench is washing off.
Enduring Image: Lori's necklace--a locket and Rick's wedding band--lying in the grass a few feet from where she and Shane are having sex in the woods.
Deviations from the Comic:
- Tons of new characters, including the hate-spouting hillbilly Dixon, Jacqui, and T-Dog.
- A whole involved escape mission including the above characters.
Grade: 8/10 (It seems that they're really trying to stretch the tension of getting Rick and Lori together--but along the way, some pretty thoughtful, scary stuff concerning the refugees has happened.)
