The new song (available for free on the band's site) is a typically folksy, uptempo stomper featuring Gillian Welch on background vocals and none other than Mr. Peter Buck (!!!) on the 12-string guitar. Word of the R.E.M. guitarist's involvement has been buzzing around the internet for months now, so it's very exciting to finally hear the results of that collaboration.
The King Is Dead is the Portland band's sixth studio album overall and their first since last year's outstanding rock opera The Hazards Of Love. If the new song is any indication, we can expect a more traditional, back-to-basics outing from indie rock's kings of the $10 word.
