T.I.L.F.T.: Random fall holidays

On Aug 30, 2010

August is ending. Normally, I am sad about the unofficial close of summer, but this year I decided that there is much to look forward to in the fall (mainly the lower temperatures, because I'm a wimpy northerner who's stuck in sucky Georgia summers).

What's so great about fall? Not only do we have at least one excellent holiday every month (September = Labor Day, October = Columbus Day and Halloween, November = Thanksgiving), but there are a host of other holidays to celebrate. And I love a good holiday.

Here's a quick list (with Ology notes in parenthesis). You can find every random, yet real, holiday ever invented here.

Happy almost fall, everyone!

September:

  • Be Kind to Editors and Writers Month (this should really be every month)
  • Apple Month (screw other fruits, apples rule September)
  • Library Card Sign Up Month (you can rent digital copies now)
  • National Honey Month (wait for it...)
  • Pleasure Your Mate Month (this one and the one above are suspiciously close together)
  • International Enthusiasm Week, 1st through 8th (you can be indifferent the rest of the month)
  • National Waffle Week, 5th through 11th (as if I ever needed an excuse)
  • American Massage Therapy Week, 23rd through 26th (imagine how peaceful the world would be if we all got massages during the same week)
  • Banned Books Week, 27th through October 2nd (let's be edgy together and read "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," which was banned in China's Hunan province because it portrayed animals acting with human complexity)
  • Talk Like a Pirate Day, 19th (arrrr, we can starrrrt practicin' now)
  • International Chocolate Day, 13th (YES)

October:

  • Adopt a Shelter Dog Month (but only after you've read this)
  • National Bake and Decorate Month (a whole month of cakes!)
  • National Chili Month (should also be national fart-suppression month)
  • Squirrel Awareness Month (I'm very aware that they've been eating my tomato plants all freaking summer)
  • National Work From Home Week, 3rd through 9th (in observance, I will be working from a different part of my home)
  • Disarmament Week, 24th through 30th (get your guns back just in time for Halloween)
  • International Magic Week, 25th through 31st (excuse to watch Harry Potter movies again?)
  • Techie's Day, 2nd (nerds rule)
  • World Smile Day, 1st (it can't hurt)
  • National Pierogi Day, 8th (learn how to make your own here)
  • National Grouch Day, 15th (to balance out the universe, any smile holiday must be followed by a grouch holiday)

November:

  • National Peanut Butter Lovers Month (should combine this with September's apples)
  • National Roasting Month (free reign to roast anything your heart desires)
  • International Drum Month (an excuse to beat something with a stick)
  • Pursuit of Happiness Week, 7th through 13th (all other pursuits outside this time-frame will be squashed)
  • Dear Santa Letter Week, 8th through 14th (like Smile Day, it can't hurt)
  • National Game and Puzzle Week, 21st through 28th (break out the Bananagrams and Monopoly!)
  • Cookie Monster Day, 2nd (that's good enough for me)
  • Use Your Common Sense Day, 4th (the other 364 days a year--meh)
  • Zero Tasking Day, 7th (though having this holiday on your to-do list is a task)
  • Have a Bad Day Day, 19th (because everybody gets one)
  • Flossing Day, 26th (a Thanksgiving holiday for your teeth and gums?)
