Wyclef Jean isn’t abandoning his presidential bid just yet. The hip-hop singer’s name was not on the list of approved candidates for Haiti’s presidential race, but he says that he is going to try to get the courts to overturn the decision that disqualified him from the race. The board did not cite a specific reason for rejecting his candidacy on Friday night, but it was presumably because Wyclef did not meet the residency requirements. In Haiti, the presidential candidate is required to have lived in the country for five consecutive years before the election. Wyclef's team claims that he does not have to adhere to this law as strictly, since he was appointed a roving ambassador in 2007 under President Rene Preval and was allowed to live and travel outside of the country.
Jean wrote on his Twitter that his lawyers will be appealing the decision and that him and his team has met all the requirements stipulated by the law. Stay tuned for what happens next in this seemingly never-ending saga.
