Wyclef Jean is to announce today his candidacy for president of Haiti on Larry King Live. Haiti’s recent earthquake, which killed more than 200,000 people, was the eye-opening event that encouraged the rapper to embark on this political path. He said to TIME magazine “if not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this. The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century.”
Although it may seem odd for a rapper to run for president, if anyone can do it, it's Wyclef Jean. Jean has been committed to his home country throughout his career, and has done wonders to showcase the positive of his homeland as well as to encourage people to fight against the negative, through his songs and his charity, Yele Haiti. He sees no disagreement between being a performer and politician, saying, “if I can’t take five years out to serve my country as President, then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything.” The Haitian presidential election will take place on November 28th of this year.
