Armond White thinks Ebert destroyed film criticism

On Jul 20, 2010

Infamous New York Press film critic Armond White is best know for his extremely negative, equally puzzling, and verbosely academic reviews of universally celebrated films such as Toy Story 3. Last night, he sat down with the boys of the /Filmcast and boy did he ever drop some jewels.

In mainstream media and the internet, most people who are writing about films are simply writing from a fan’s perspective instead of a truly critical perspective. So what used to be termed “film critics” now is almost meaningless, because you just got a free-for-all of enthusiasms rather than criticism.

I do think it is fair to say that Roger Ebert destroyed film criticism... What he did simply was not criticism. It was simply blather... That’s really a pea-brained kind of fan gibberish.

I, for one, hope the E-Man himself gets involved in the discussion. The podcast audio will be available on slashfilm.com within the next 24 hours.
