The guessing game over who will direct the next James Bond screen adventure and attempt to fill the intimidating shoes of non-returning Skyfall director Sam Mendes continues. Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire) was recently asked by Cinema Blend whether he'd consider taking over the reigns of the 007 franchise on Bond 24. Bummer: 'Skyfall' Director Sam Mendes Won't Return For Next James Bond Film

Unsurprising, but Oscar-winning Skyfall director Sam Mendes has formally turned down the offer to direct the next James Bond film--tentatively titled (per tradition) Bond 24—after vaguely hinting that he'd be open to helming another 007 adventure. "It has been a very difficult decision not to accept [producers] Michael [G. Wilson] and Barbara [Broccoli's] very generous offer to direct the next Bond movie," says Mendes. "Directing Skyfall was one of the best experiences of my professional life, but I have theatre and other commitments, including productions of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and King Lear, that need my complete focus over the next year and beyond."

Super cool news for James Bond fans—Dame Shirley Bassey, known best for her Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever and Moonraker 007 theme songs, will be performing at The Oscars later this month as part of the 85^th Annual Academy Awards' 50^th anniversary tribute to the James Bond film franchise (according to Reuters).

Dame Shirely won't be alone at The Oscars this year—the February 24 ceremony will also feature Adele performing "Skyfall," the hit theme song from Bond's latest (and $1 billion-plus grossing) adventure, which is nominated in five categories (Best Original Song, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Cinematography), is the first James Bond film to be nominated for a single Oscar since For Your Eyes Only in 1981. Yeah, ouch.

You can plan on hearing at least a few bars of "Goldfinger," but the details of Bassey's performance and the Bond tribute at large (fingers crossed that we'll see Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig together on stage) are appropriately top secret.
