T.I.L.F.T...Summer: 'Scott Pilgrim: The Game'

On Jun 15, 2010

Ologists, I don't know about you, but I think it just got straight-up summer in here. I'm not sure exactly what changed. Maybe it's the Jimmy Buffet music slowly seeping onto the airwaves. Maybe it's the rebirth of the fountain in Washington Square Park. Or maybe it's the appearance of macaroni salad in Food Emporium. Whatever the reason, it's clear we have entered the season of sandals, cold drinks and addictive TV marathons. To a gamer, that can mean only one thing: new releases. To an especially nerdy gamer, that can only mean one even more specific thing: the game adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, one of the many Things I'm Looking Forward To this summer. Why am I so excited for this adaptation of an adaptation of a modern classic? Read on, Evil Exologists!

The gameplay looks so very, very River City Ransom

This picture pretty much encapsulates everything I am looking forward to about Scott Pilgrim's video game adventure, but since I usually use three pictures in these posts, you're gonna have to work with me. Just...just look at all the action up there! Immediately you can tell it's a four-player brawler a la Turtles in Time. Plus there are like four special moves going on: Ramona is swinging her giant mallet, Scott is laying down a bass groove, Kim is...umm...making a face, and Stephen Stills is all ready to introduce Baseball Cap Guy to the soles of his shoes. This is clearly a game that lets you get your friends together, mash some buttons and beat on some enemies. The graphics are simple. The attacks are outrageous. This is an arcade beat-'em-up for the generation that made arcade beat-'em-ups famous. And man, am I down with that.

There is four-player co-op!

"But Josh," you're thinking, "You already mentioned this under the last picture!" Yeah, well, deal. You have to wait for the rest of the class to catch up, Tahj Mowry. Seriously, though! Four player co-op! People who have had the experience know there is nothing better than setting up on the couch with three of your buds, fighting over who gets to play what character, and sharing some store-brand soda as you lay a glorious smack down upon all who stand in your way. Chances are you and your friends naturally gravitate into a Scott-Ramona-Stills-Kim relationship, so there shouldn't be too much squabbling, but it's not unwise to start adopting an avatar now. I'm gonna go ahead and call dibs on Ramona because in addition to being a Geekologist, I also moonlight as a manic pixie dream girl.

It's faithful to the original comic books!

Here we see Matthew Patel, first of Ramona's evil exes. On a first look, a gamer might think: "All right, how am I gonna handle that flame-fist thing he's got going?" But a Scott Pilgrim fan sees past the problem and notices the freakin' sweet Demon Hipster Girls swarming behind him, straight off the pages of the source material. Although it's called Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game and is tied in with the release of the movie, I think this is really an adaptation of the comic book. It's not out to become a blockbuster; it probably won't make millions in sales or merchandising. What it wants to do is give every gamer and his/her friends a chance to be heroes. And that's what it's all about.

PlayStation owners will have the first chance to fight for love--SP will be released over PSN this August. Xboxers, worry not--the brawler won't be exclusive for long.

Anyone wanna come over and try this out? Can I convince you with a trailer, perhaps?

I'm serious, guys. I have Tostitos and everything.
