Gabriel commented on FYI: Lollapalooza 2013 Lineup To Be Announced Next Week:
“Acts I would definitely want to see if I could make it: NIN, Mumford, Phoenix, The Postal Service, QOTSA, Kendrick Lamar, Crystal Castles, Alt-J, Band of Horses, Baroness and Theophilus London. Plus many other shows I would enjoy seeing.”
In a recent interview, Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford had this to stay about early sessions for the band's follow-up to this year's best-selling (and fast, too) Babel: "We've always done what feels good, rather than what we've thought long and hard about, and we'll do whatever feels soulful next, whether that's with an electric guitar or a synthesizer."
Yes, the dreaded s-word. The sane, rational part of my brain says Mumford is just using the threat of "going electronic" as an example to demonstrate that they won't simply rest on their laurels of being "that folk band" forever… but the other part of my brain, the one that's watched too many good bands lose their heart and soul behind a Mini Moog, has a real bad feeling about this.
"It's dangerous for us to talk about what we've been discussing for the third album, but we do have greater ambitions not to just stay within certain sonic confines," said keyboardist Ben Lovett in the aforementioned interview. "We're not going to be the band that stands for folk music or organic music."
And that's cool… and inevitable… but I was really, really hoping 2012 would be the '80s revival's last croak after years and years of awkward (at best) and painful (at worst) albums doused in throwback synthesizers and Top 40-eying dance beats from bands and artists that, let's face it, do their best work behind instruments made out of tree meat. Will it be interesting (and amazing, let's face it) to hear Mumford & Sons branch out on their next album? Totally. Just… please don't get carried away, fellas. That's all I'm saying.
What do you guys think? What should we expect to hear on Mumford & Sons' third album? Let me know what you think in the comments section below!
