It's shocking to have two icons pass on in the same week--especially considering that about a year ago was the summer of celebrity deaths--but it's been confirmed that Dennis Hopper died today, from complications of prostate cancer. The notoriously difficult actor was 74.
He fell ill last September, only to discover in January that his prostate cancer had metastasized to his bones. Literally on his deathbed, he struggled with a very public divorce from fifth wife Victoria Duffy--who he accused of stealing $1.5 million of his art--and trying to work on his Starz series Crash.
Hopper received two Oscar nominations during his Hollywood career: Best Original Screenplay for Easy Rider, and Best Supporting Actor in Hoosiers. Yet due to his estrangement from Tinseltown, he also took up photography, sculpting, and painting. His show "Dennis Hopper and the New Hollywood" finished its stay in Australia on April 25, and Museum of Contemporary Art director Jeffrey Deitch is rushing to finish his tribute to the actor, "Dennis Hopper Double Standard". The show will open July 11 in Los Angeles.
Finally, Hopper's last film Alpha and Omega will be released posthumously; it's a CGI children's film about wolves. It's no Rebel Without a Cause, but it, combined with Deitch's show, will hopefully soothe the passing of the hardliving actor.
