Last fall, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) stumbled upon his new wife Rita (played by Julie Benz), dead in the bathtub--murdered by the Trinity Killer as revenge for Dexter unmasking him. But the Dexter showrunners have some surprising news: Rita's coming back!
For an episode, at least. Julie Benz will reprise her role of the sweet but tough-as-nails mom--and the only person Dexter truly feels close to--in the first episode of the fifth season, starting September 26. Although there aren't any concrete details as the situation getting her back in Dexter's life, the producers have clarified that a) she's not coming back from the dead, and b) she won't appear as a ghost, either.
I'm thinking a flashback, especially since they say that her part will "help Dexter deal with his newfound feelings of loss and grief — emotions he has never really felt before." Here's hoping we're treated to a brief, happy memory; as season 4 wound down last year, there were too many misunderstandings and betrayals between them for us to appreciate the characters' love.
Since getting killed off, Benz had a guest role on Desperate Housewives as stripper Robin Gallagher; and in the fall she'll star in ABC's No Ordinary Family.
