To this day, The Roots are one of the best bands I've seen live--the bassist played technically ferocious improvisations at Lollapalooza while smoking a Black and Mild for the entire show. They have been a fixture in hip hop since the early 90s and this summer, they will continue their musical domination by releasing their 9th studio album (11th album overall), entitled How I Got Over. The name is a reference to a gospel standard performed by Mahalia Jackson and is all about moving on and staying relevant, a skill that The Roots have mastered. In an interview on HipHopGame.com, Black Thought spoke about the record, calling the vibe very positive because it will be a reflection of the "relief" felt in the new Obama era. Also, it will supposedly feature Beanie Sigel, Young Chris, Chrisette Michelle, Blu, Phonte (of Little Brother), Pharoahe Monch, Cody ChestnuTT, and Patty Crash. Even more interesting, the band will reinterpret all covers through musical arrangements and live playing rather than using samples--a departure from most of hip hop. The album is set for release on June 8th of this summer and the first single, also entitled "How I Got Over," was debuted last summer on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon where the group has a gig playing nightly as the official show band. Unfortunately due to this television commitment, they will not be able to tour for the record. However, while I may not get another chance to see them live for a while (which certainly is a tragedy), hopefully the tunes on How I Got Over will sufficiently hit the spot in my thirst for more Roots.
