Movie Geeks: ‘Inglourious Basterds' was Robbed!

On Mar 11, 2010

It’s only been four days since the Academy Awards, but in Internet time it might as well be four months. So I know you’ve got to be tired of all the coverage. Hell, I was sick of the thing ten minutes in when Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were still suspended halfway above the Kodak Theatre. Now, if I get one more email update about what-the-hell Sean Penn was going on about (his estranged wife) or why George Clooney was so grumpy (wouldn’t you be, if you knew your films would be shut out) or how most of the Precious ladies wore royal blue (Mo’Nique was shouting out to Hattie McDaniels and Gabourey Sidibe was honoring writer Sapphire), I’m going to go all Mélanie Laurent at my next press junket.

However, and in partial honor of Mélanie, I think this is worth reporting: A bit before Sunday’s ceremony, Canadian movie site Film Junk asked its readers which of the ten Best Picture nominees they would send home with the top golden statue and the votes are in. The winner, by a landslide is Inglourious Basterds. I know what you’re thinking, of course the cinephiles that hit up Film Junk would vote for a Tarantino movie, but I know some diehard Quentin fans who hate the film. And almost equally surprising is that Avatar (which everyone assumes came in second for the prize) only took 9.8% of the votes, while the actual winner, The Hurt Locker, earned just 20%.

Here’s the final breakdown:

1. Inglourious Basterds — 44.5%

2. The Hurt Locker — 20%

3. District 9 — 11.5%

4. Avatar — 9.8%

5. A Serious Man — 5.2%

6. Up in the Air — 3.8%

7. Up — 2.5%

8. An Education — 1.7%

9. The Blind Side — 0.6%

10. Precious — 0.4%
