"The definition of 'rock and roll' means different things to different people, but as broad as the classifications may be, they all share a common love of the music," said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame president and CEO Joel Peresman, announcing the 2013 induction ceremony nominees earlier today. "This year we again proudly put forth a fantastic array of groups and artists that span the entire genre that is 'rock and roll.'"
Though it's a little light on the alternative end of the spectrum, this year's list of nominees is a formidable collection of legendary names spanning the worlds of blues and Motown R&B through hip-hop and early electronic music. (Will try to bite my lip re: The Cure, The Smiths, etc.) As announced, the 2013 induction nominees are…
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
Chic
Deep Purple
Heart
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Albert King
Kraftwerk
The Marvelettes
The Meters
Randy Newman
N.W.A.
Procol Harum
Public Enemy
Rush
Donna Summer
Apart from the inevitable "so-and-so isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame already!" reactions, there's not a whole lot to get excited over, to be honest. The continued recognition for early hip-hop icons deserves some major props, though when you consider everyone else eligible this year (the nominees this year needed to have released their first record in 1987 or later), it feels like a bit of a dud list… all apologies to Joan Jett, who can and would kick my ass and should've been inducted ages ago. In fact, apart from N.W.A. and Public Enemy, all of this year's nominees have been eligible for years now. Can you say "clean-up and catch-up year"?
The 28th Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled to go down April 18, 2013 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. For the first time ever, the non-industry public can vote for their favorites over at RollingStone.com. If you've ever wanted to see Randy Newman and Flava Flav on stage together, well, now's your chance.
