Far be it for me to offer advice to seemingly hopeless Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, but I don't know if I'd want Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder pissed off at me. I mean, have you listened to "Blood" lately? Shudder. The very socially active, very bearded Mr. Vedder was on hand at a private dinner fundraiser in South Tampa, Florida yesterday to perform a few songs and introduce the man of the hour, President Barack Obama.
The $20,000-per-person event (which wound up raising upwards of $1.7 million for the incumbent president) kicked off with Vedder remarking, "I can't say I've ever played that many songs in a suit before" before playing a short four-song set with his trusty mandolin: "Rise," "Without You," James Taylor's "Millworker" and (of course) Neil Young's "Rockin' In The Free World."
Eddie also took the opportunity to tsk-tsk Governor Romney over his recently unearthed 47% comments, telling the crowd, "It's very upsetting to hear a presidential candidate be so easily dismissive of such a ginormous amount of the population." Vedder then shared a personal story of how he enrolled in a government program that allowed him to land a security guard position during his pre-rock star days. ""It was that job that allowed me to also afford the guitars and tape recorder and microphones I needed to let me afford keep working on music… It was also the job I reluctantly left to move up to Seattle for less pay, in order to join a band. It all worked out."
President Obama later thanked Vedder for the introduction, adding: "For you to share that story with us, Eddie, speaks volumes not only about you but about this country."
So there you have it. Obama and Eddie Vedder are buds… Mitt Romney really likes The Killers. Vote accordingly, America.
