Listen Up: Mister Cee Drops Hour Long J Dilla Tribute
Even though Hot 97's Mister Cee is running a bit behind here, having missed Dilla's respective birth and death dates (February 7th; February 10th), one of his classic 60 minute tribute mixes (technically, it's only 59 minutes and 34 seconds, but whatever) is always welcome.
For a full hour (nearly), Cee spun a full-on Dilla mix to celebrate the life of hip-hop's greatest producer, such as we've seen him do in the past with similar situations. It's a necessity for any Dilla addict, a proper introduction to new-comers, and, overall, just something that's good to listen to from front to end.
You can catch a free listen of the full segment below. R.I.P. Jay Dee; we'll always wonder where hip-hop would be if you hadn't been taken from us.
P.S. - Make sure to keep up to date, as posthumous Dilla projects are continuing to leak through the woodworks (I'm not going to ...
J Dilla's Official Record Collection Goes For Sale On eBay
Yes, this is the real deal, and, as you can assume, the first sale has already been sold. Don't worry though--Dilla's collection will still continue to go up for purchase in weekly installments.
Here's the backstory, as was posted on J-Dilla.com:
"Years ago J Dilla moved a large collection of records, personal test presses and audio master tapes into a storage until after his Detroit basement studio flooded. Shortly thereafter he moved to Los Angeles.
The storage unit was left by Dilla and taken care of by his mother, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, but attention and priorities soon shifted: Dilla became seriously ill and hospitalized, and with his mother at his side in Los Angeles during a planned two-week visited that turned into years, the unit was lost.
In Spring of 2012, the entire collection was finally recovered. The back payment...
Dilla's beat have been just about everywhere in hip-hop, but the artists who have touched them in close collaborations alongside Jay Dee are the ones that can truly express their affection for the late producer's work on the judgment that they were present when the sounds were initially made, and sometimes for them personally (at least by my thought). Busta was a frequent collaborator and friend of Dilla's (hit up his Dillagence tape if you haven't), and in a recent interview with Hot 97's DJ Enuff, he shared his five favorite Dilla tracks.
"My top five Dilla beats, [at number one] I would have to say is 'So Hardcore,' he produced that for me on the Extinction Level Event album. 'Show Me What You Got' for me, it's on the Anarchy album…'You Can't Hold a Torch,' he produced that for me on The Big Bang album with me and Q-Tip. 'Runnin,' The Pharcyde, and number five I would have to say is 'Players' on the Slum Village [Fantastic, Vol. 2] album."
Bussa Bus went on to express his thoughts on Slum Village's Fantastic Vol. 2:
"That whole album is my favorite Dilla production in one body of work. Like, I got dope Dilla production through different albums, I've always had 'em on every album, but that one album to this day has yet to be outdone by any producer as far as just one body of work. There's been producers that made things that were phenomenal in different situations, but everything was like the most phenomenal in one body of work."
Here's the full interview. Give it a watch, throw up your thoughts.
