Elbow singer Guy Garvey is one busy bloke—in addition to fronting one of the best bands you aren't listening to (whose career-spanning new b-sides and rarities collection Dead In The Boot drops September 4), he's also apparently planning to start his very own, vinyl-only record label with Fiction Records head Jim Chancellor.
In a new interview with the BBC, he outlines his plan to release four-track vinyl EPs from up and coming new bands that might not have the money to put out a full-length debut. "We don't want disposable songs-- we want a 20 minute record," he says. "Young bands that are perhaps self-financing and have to make money through touring can release three EPs rather than one album. That's three times as much excuse to tour, so it's working commercially."

So, why vinyl instead of an online stream or digital download? "You're making something that somebody who really loves your music is going to go and find," Garvey explains, "It's like leaving a note in your lover's pocket that they won't find for six months." Or, you know, leaving a note in your lover's pocket that they won't be able to play because they don't own a turntable. I suppose it's a bit more romantic to think of it his way. That'd be why he's Guy Garvey and why I'm... um, going to go put something on the turntable and stop talking now.
