Okay, huge news. Well, I think it's huge, at least. One of my all-time favorite musicians in the entire world, Miss Kaki King, is returning with a new studio album called Glow, out October 9 via Velour Music Group. If you know anything about Kaki, you probably know that: 1.) She and I have more or less the same haircut… win, and that: 2.) She's kind of the most prodigiously talented guitarist on the block. You might also know that her last couple albums, including my favorites …Until We Felt Red, Dreaming Of Revenge and her last one, 2010's Junior, have been more vocal, full-band, almost post-rock inspired affairs.
According to the new press release, however, Glow will be something of an "artistic reboot" (their words), focusing once again on Kaki's solo guitar prowess a la her first two critically acclaimed albums. "This is a guitar record," she promises. "This is the sound of a person playing guitar. Whatever additions we made, the fundamental of this record is still one person playing a guitar. That's who I am."
I have to say, as much as I really dig the early instrumental stuff (Legs To Make Us Longer in particular is a must-listen), I've really enjoyed following her stylistic evolution into vocal songwriting and full-band arrangements. I'm hoping the new album doesn't take things too far back to the drawing board, but I'm confident that if she made it, I'm going to like it. Oh, and hey! She's also hitting the road this fall to perform a few new songs, probably some old ones, tell a few stories in between, etc. Check out the Glow tour itinerary below.
