This isn't much more than roaming rumor, and with more concrete confirmation that Nicki Minaj might be taking on the role, you can probably dismiss probability of this coming to fruition; that all stated, we'll rather discuss exactly why Kanye West would want to be a judge on the American Idol panel.
Firstly, the guy is into shattering hope, partly due to the Hemingway ideal of "if it's bad, I'll hate you, and if it's good, I'll hate you more because that means you might be better than me." I find it difficult to believe that massive biases wouldn't hold presence over his judgment, mainly because of the necessity he has to preserve his ego, and additionally because he likes to see people cry under his words.
Second, Ye laps up any attempt at getting more media presence the way a parched dog will lick a scum puddle. He thrives in sucking the American eyes dry for his own pleasure, and will likely make the show more about him rather than making it about the potential artists.
Third, it provides every opportunity for him to nationally brag to an audience of millions about his talents. His commentary would be rife with "Well, when I do it, it's pure magic, and if you were capable to ever coming close to my level of genius, you could maybe do it too." He considers himself the standard, and thus would project that with full steam so as to stroke his vainglorious self-obsession.
Gossip says that he's "on the fence" about the whole matter, but we'll see what comes to be. Personally, I'd prefer the guy stays in the studio doing something somewhat worthwhile, though my arcane want to see regulated suffering can't help but spawn curiosity to what purpose he might actually serve as a judge.
