As you might have heard, Seattle heroes Soundgarden are set to return this fall with their first new album since 1996's Down On The Upside… and hey, turns out the fact that it won't include The Avengers soundtrack stinker "Live To Rise" (see below) might only be the second or third best thing about it!
As revealed earlier today on the band's official site, their long-awaited new album is titled… drum roll… King Animal and will hit stores and playlists on November 13. (Hush, nobody tell our cat Stephen that he's not King Animal anymore.) To offer up a little taste of what to expect, Chris Cornell & Co. dropped a quick behind the scenes video featuring a snippet of new song "Worse Dreams." Check it out below.
First thoughts?
Sounds a little bit (apologies, Matt Cameron) like something Pearl Jam might have left off Yield. A little buzzy… a little meandering in that good sort of way… a little jammy, a little garage-ish… all gelling together in a tight, punchy chorus. Pretty far removed from the band's groove metal roots, sure, but personally, I'd rather hear them age gracefully into a sort of elder-statesman sort of phase than just mine their classic sound with embarrassing results. Shrug, maybe I'm in the minority…
