The Smashing Pumpkins were slotted to play a FREE show at Boston’s (no longer around) in Tempe Arizona on the 10th of February in 2000. After the show they were going to stay and do some autographs. HELL YES!!!! I’M IN!!!!
My girlfriend (not currently my girlfriend) and I left hours before the show started due to ‘people in line’ issues. We had planned the whole day around this deal.
Hour one: After the first hour and told her we should leave. “C’mon, this is taking forever” I kept saying. “Let’s wait just a little bit longer” she kept saying. Didn’t have a Smartphone back then so we just starred at each other. Holy shit that got boring.
Hour two: Around hour two, someone from Boston’s came out and told us that the fire marshal came in and told them to lower the attendance. They couldn’t even fit HALF the amount of people inside for this show. With that said, the Smashing Pumpkins decided to do TWO FREE SHOWS and skip the autograph session. HELL YES!!!! I’M!!!!
Hour three: Around this time (I think) they handed out a promotional CD of Machina. Sweet!!!! Hour three kicked ass!!!!
Hour four: Okay, this sucks balls. “I’ve seen them before … many times. We should just leave” I kept saying. “Let’s just wait a little bit longer” she kept saying. At this point we still seemed so damn far away AND, the first show was in full swing.
Hour five: Holy Mother of Pearl, I want to stick sharp sticks in my eyes. I’m not sure we were even at talking terms at this point in time. I don’t remember a lot of joyous conversations during hour five. However, the line started to move pretty fast as they were letting people in for the second show. We were still deep in line and I didn’t think we had a chance at this show. We were about 30 people back from the door and I’m friggin’ frantic at this stage. Completely mindless, at best. I truly felt crazy and I didn’t know what I was going to do if they shut that door before I got in. Now we’re about five people away from the door and they’re letting people in damn fast. You’ll have to remember, this was before 9/11 and you could simply walk in the door. No screening, no pat downs, no ID check, you could leave everything in your pockets … nothing. Ya, just walked in.
Hour six: We’re in!!!!!! There were only a few people behind us that made it in for the second show. Still SO MANY people in line ... kind of felt bad. Well, not really. I was five rows back from the front of the stage… right in front of Melissa Auf Der Maur. Sweet Jesus that woman is hot.
Glad I stuck it out. Loved the show and the promo cd!!!!
