Watch Jimmy Kimmel Join Huey Lewis And The News For "I Want A New Drug"
It's a good thing Huey Lewis And The News chose Jimmy Kimmel Live to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their 1983 breakout Sports with a super-fun version of "I Want A New Drug"—who else on late night TV could've possibly handled those wailing clarinet solos but Kimmel, right?
Follow Classic Rock on Ology for all the latest news, reviews, leaks, rumors, videos, tour dates, features, fan events and more from your favorite bands and artists
The special anniversary deluxe edition reissue of Sports, featuring a slew of bonus material (but, thankfully, no Jimmy Kimmel clarinet solos) is out now. Check out last night's "I Want A New Drug" below and feel free to speculate what Patrick Bateman might make of it in the comments.
As reported by TMZ and others, long-time Elton John touring bassist and Michigan native Robert "Bob" Wayne Birch was discovered dead near his Los Angeles home yesterday in what authorities suspect (but haven't yet confirmed) was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Birch, 56, is survived by his wife Michele and son, Jonathan.
Born and raised in Detroit, Birch moved to Los Angeles in 1981, playing with numerous groups before joining Elton John on his The One world tour in 1992. He had been a staple of John's band ever since, contributing to several studio albums while also backing the likes of Billy Joel, Sheryl Crow, Rufus Wainwright, Stevie Wonder and others.
"I am devastated and shocked at the loss of my friend and fellow musician, Bob Birch," said Elton in a statement on his official website. "To me, Bob was family. He had been a member of my band for 20 years; we played over 1400 concerts together. He was one of the greatest musicians I have ever worked with, and in all our years on the road he never played or sang a bad note."
"He was a brilliant musician, a true professional and a wonderful man to work with," added Billy Joel in a separate statement. "After 16 years on the road together, I considered him to be a good friend. I and all the people in my touring organization will miss him very much."
R.I.P. Bob Birch, from one music-loving Michigan native to another.
