Last Friday night, "it on a stick" Brooklyn indie gang Grizzly Bear joined The Colbert Report host Stephen Colbert aboard the USS Intrepid, performing a few songs as part of StePhest Colbchella '012: Rockaugustfest, Colbert's second annual summer music festival. Though the band were quick to define their music as "smooth jazz" and proved utterly incapable of not eating frontman Ed Droste in an imaginary shipwreck scenario, they did perform amazing versions of "Yet Again" and "Sleeping Ute" (from their new album Shields, out September 18) and, heavy sigh, a heart-crushing run through Veckatimest staple "Two Weeks."

Side note: Ed Droste is looking very tan. And Chris Taylor is looking very Landry Clarke from Friday Night Lights. But everyone's pants are, in fact, very colorful, so it's all good.
"Yet Again"
Wondering exactly, quantifiably speaking, how much more awesome this song sounds with the addition of The Colbert Bump. Hmm. The Shields lead single still sounds amazing—a spooky warm, cavernous bit of reverb-soaked guitar and billowing keyboard business decked out in the band's trademark "Beach Boys on cough syrup" harmonies.
"Two Weeks"
Ed, your voice instantly… instantly… makes me feel debilitatingly sad. But you know, in that good sort of way! Shrug, so what, I can't get through Veckatimest without borderline sobbing. So what? Clearly I'm the only one—Ed can't stop grinning in between lines. As far as first concerts in two years go, they sound pretty top-notch.
"Sleeping Ute"
Oh man, this song… remember a few moments ago when I said that Ed's voice got me really sad real quick? Yeah, well, multiply that by a trillion and you've got what happens when Daniel Rosen steps up to the microphone. Sounds great live—love the warbling woomph of all those analogue synths bubbling over Ed and Chris's harmonies. Sigh. I'm going to be a mess when this album drops…
